“Keiki Steps to Kindergarten” is enrolling students for its free summer learning program that helps children ages 4 to 5 and their families adjust to a school setting.
The classes will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Mondays through Fridays about three weeks before the new school year starts at public schools on O‘ahu, the Big Island, Moloka‘i and Kaua‘i. The goal of the program is to familiarize students and their families with expected behaviors in kindergarten.
Standards such as waiting in line, asking permission, sharing and others will be introduced and children will have the opportunity to make new friends. Parents will learn how to help make their child ready for school.
“Keiki Steps to Kindergarten” will be offered on Kauai at Kapa‘a Elementary School. Contact Marci Sarsona at 690-8097 or e-mail marcis@inpeace-hawaii.org for more information.
Now in its third year, this program was inspired by the Maui Good Beginnings Alliance who has been helping keiki and their families in the crucial transition to a formal, school setting for eight years. “Keiki Steps to Kindergarten” is a project of INPEACE, in partnership with the Kamehameha Schools’ Ho‘omohala Kainaulu Initiative.
