Carl Furutani, a Kaua‘i native and former University of Hawai‘i baseball coach, will coordinate the Speed & Quickness baseball clinics this Saturday and Sunday at Isenberg Field in Lihu‘e.
The clinics are free to children 7 and older.
Various UH alumni and coaching staffers will join Furutani over the weekend, including former players Derek Honma, Paul Ah Yat, Rory Pico, Corey Ishigo and Todd Koishigawa, and former coach Daryl Masanda.
Most are still active in baseball in some way.
Pico and Ishigo are now head coaches at Campbell and Kailua high schools, respectively, and Yat pitched professionally in Triple-A. Koishigawa, a former Kaua‘i resident, heads up the baseball program at Pac-5.
Players between 7 and 12 years old can attend the clinic from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on either Saturday or Sunday. Players 13 years and older can participate in the session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on either day.
Players are asked to report to the clinic at least 30 minutes before the start time, and must wear covered shoes.
The clinics are sponsored by the County of Kaua‘i, said Roy Nishida, the county’s Anti-Drug coordinator.

Man convicted of defrauding golf tour
A Maui man has been found guilty of defrauding the 2001 Pro Tour Hawai‘i.
A federal grand jury convicted Gregg Wood, the tour’s financial backer, on Tuesday.
His bilking of the golf series in 2001 and later led to its quick demise shortly afterward.
He was found guilty of wire fraud for sending money from the Pro Tour account to an unidentified individual in California.
He was originally indicted on charges of stealing 62-thousand dollars by writing checks to himself and depositing money into his personal bank account during the first two months of the ten-event tour.
The tour was canceled after only three events because 700-thousand dollars in entry fees had gone missing and the winners’ checks bounced.
Wood faces up to 20 years in prison and one million dollars in fines.
