An accident on the Kapa‘a Bypass yesterday afternoon between an Acura sedan and a Honda van killed the driver of the sedan and his passenger, police say.
The sedan was heading north on the bypass about a mile from the Kuhio Highway junction at around 4:30 p.m. when it apparently crossed the centerline and collided with the southbound van, county public information officer Mary Daubert said last night.
The driver of the sedan died at the scene and his passenger, another adult male, sustained critical injuries and was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he later died.
The female driver of the van was also transported to Wilcox and admitted for treatment, Daubert said. A two-year-old child was also in the van, and was treated and released yesterday at Wilcox. Police said the child was in a car seat.
Police do not know at this point if alcohol or drugs factored into the crash, and will continue their investigation.
The bypass was closed in both directions as emergency personnel responded and investigators attempted to determine the cause of the accident, Daubert said.
The names of the deceased will be withheld until proper notifications have been made.
The two deaths are the seventh and eighth traffic fatalities on Kaua‘i this year, Daubert said.
