Time trials got under way at 2 p.m., with the cars running the timed quarter mile several times to establish their average or “dial-in” time for the elimination races which started at 8 p.m.
Drivers race for points, which are totaled after each race and at the end of the season for points lead prizes, trophies, and money awarded at the annual Garden Isle Racing Association Awards party held in December. There are some bragging rights too.
In the evening elimination rounds, the PS&D Napa-sponsored Jr. Dragster class saw Tristyn Tadaki win with a quick 11.61 elapsed time (ET) on a 0.563 light at 55.49 mph over runner up Sheldon Costa.
The Suzuki Kaua‘i-sponsored Bike class winner was David Alisna on his 2005 Honda 1000cc V-twin motorcycle over Mike Hawkes driving a Harley Davidson V-Rod V-twin 1130cc/turbo that red lighted.
The always exciting Auto Stylin’ and Performance/Island Image Embroidery class of Muscle V8’s was won by Jon Nakamura in his 4.6 V8, 2005 Ford Mustang running a 12.653 with a dial-in of 12.15 and a reaction time of 0.621. Runner up was Bobby Barros driving a 1985 Chevy El Camino 350 who red lighted.
The popular Destination Autoworks-sponsored Pro ET class with 22 cars entered, came down to winner Dave Onodera driving a ‘69 Chevy Nova V8 leaving with a 0.641 reaction time, an ET of 11.326 on a dial-in of 11.29 and speed of 118.11 mph.
Runner-up Wendall Nonaka in his 406 Chevy powered ’87 Buick Regal ran an 11.037 ET but breaks out with a 11.08 dial-in at 120.97 mph. In the Speedy Lube-sponsored Street ET class, current points leader Nestor Cabatan won again in his 2000 Honda Accord J30A1/3.06 V6 leaving with a 0.585 light and ran a 16.655 on a 16.3 dial-in at 75.13 mph. Bill Norris was runner-up in his ’85 V8 Chevy Camaro leaving with a 0.937 light, runs 15.413 on a 15.0 dial-in at 88.76 mph.
In the Sport Compact class it was Dennis Jose posting the win driving a 2.0L ’92 Honda Civic K20 running 13.159 on a 13.1 dial-in at 93.75 mph with a reaction time of 0.65 and Ricky Uemura in his ’93 Honda 1.8L red lighting.
The Garden Isle Racing Association board of directors wishes to thank the spectators for coming out to watch the races, the racers who spend a great deal of time working on their cars to put on this fun show, the many volunteers who work behind the scenes and at the track and especially the sponsors whose donations help make it all possible. As a non-profit organization, all of this support is vital to continuing this important activity.
The next race is scheduled for Saturday, June 3 at Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana, just one mile past Kekaha, with gates opening at 11 a.m. for racers and noon for spectators. Bring the whole family, your tent, chairs, food, BBQ, etc., and enjoy a day at the races. Admission is $10 per person and children 12-and-under are free.
