Last year, the line for registration for the county Summer Enrichment Program snaked out of the Lihu‘e Civic Center Pi‘ikoi Building, and those who delayed in registering their children for the popular program found sites filled and no room for their keiki.
Whether or not that will happen this year is not yet known, but the registration event is Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, this year at most neighborhood centers as well as the Pi‘ikoi Building, county officials said in a press release.
The Hanapepe, Kapa‘a, Kalaheo, Kekaha, Kilauea, Koloa and Lihu‘e neighborhood centers are the sign-up locations for programs scheduled for those sites, while registration for the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle, King Kaumuali‘i Elementary and Wilcox Elementary schools will be handled at the Pi‘ikoi Building, for programs at those sites
There may be more parents than normal registering Saturday, as some public schools including King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School in Hanama‘ulu switching this year from a traditional school calendar to a modified calendar next year won’t be offering summer school.
“Our staff has planned a lot of fun activities for the keiki, like they do every summer,” said Bernard Carvalho, director of the county Offices of Community Assistance. “The cost per child is a real bargain.”
He said almost everything about the program will remain unchanged from last summer.
The hours are the same, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided at no extra charge except for one day of the week, Wednesday, when excursions are scheduled.
The only major change in this year’s Summer Enrichment Program is that, instead of six weeks, the program will run five weeks, from June 13 to July 14, due to a modification in the public-school calendar.
Youngsters ages 5 through 11 are eligible for the summer program. A prerequisite is a child must have completed kindergarten to be accepted into the program.
Enrollment is limited, and will be done on a first-come, first-served basis.
The fee is $90 per child, and payment must be made by check or money order payable to the Director of Finance.
