Founders of the Hawai‘i lifestyle magazine SMART knew they were going to shoot the cover for their one-year anniversary issue at the Hawai‘i Capitol.
They knew it had to be great.
All they needed was that great cover girl to seal the deal.
For that, they looked to Kaua‘i’s Sanoe Lake.
Co-founder of the magazine Molly Watanabe said that Lake was the perfect choice for the cover.
“It worked out really well,” she said. “She was the perfect fit. We like to have local girls that famous on the cover.” Lake’s local roots and success in the industry, from movies to Billabong and Arnette eyewear endorsements, are the types of things that readers of SMART love, according to Watanabe.
In the issue, Lake discusses her career as a model, her switch into acting, her fashion style, and her favorite beauty products. She kept her favorite surfing spots a secret.
The anniversary issue is on newsstands now.
The magazine’s love for Kaua‘i doesn’t stop there.
Kaua‘i native Cindy Kauanui, who represents Lake at Jet Set Management, was interviewed by the writers of SMART on Wednesday for a fashion feature set to hit print this summer.
Kauanui keeps her ties to Hawai‘i close, with her modeling agency opening a satellite office in Honolulu in June, and a juice bar opening in Koloa this summer.
Watanabe said Kauanui runs the gamut for the girls of fashion.
Former Miss Hawaii Teen USA and Miss Kauai Sonya Balmores posed for the magazine’s fall issue last year.
They’ve also done a “Shopping Kaua‘i” feature, where writers visited Kapa‘a’s Lilikoi Boutique and Kilauea’s Cake fashion boutique.
