LIHU’E — The soccer fields at North Vidinha were full of excitement at Vidinha Stadium Saturday as the Kaua’i Soccer Association (KSA) opened its spring season with games throughout the day.
The Lihu’e Remix opened the Kaua’i Soccer Association on a winning note with a 4-1 win over the Eastside Hoku in the Girls Under 12 division. Taybree Souza scored twice, Jazzy Curtis added a goal, and Makana Fujimoto scored as well.
In a defensive slugfest, the Lihu’e Cougars and Westside United battled for ball control, and in an agonizing lapse, the Cougars struck as the Westside United goalie made a diving save only to have the ball die just outside his reach.
With no defenders around the goal-mouth, a Cougar dove into the ball to break the ice on a 0-0 stalemate.
KSA officials were predicting a close matchup in that game, and weren’t disappointed as the Cougars went on to edge Westside United 2-1.
In another game that spectators anticipated to be a close match up, Coach Glenn Morita of Kulia Lanakila nipped Lihu’e Remix 2-1 in the Girls Under 14 game that capped the day’s action.
Gwen Tamura, one of the KSA leaders as well as a coach for one of the teams, noted that the league was pleased that close to 40 teams are participating in the program that will have games being played at the North Vidinha fields, Wailua House-lots Park, and some at the Kapa’a Beach Park.
Not all the teams turned out for opening day, however, as several Kaua’i teams were participating in an off-island tournament during the weekend.
Full results of Saturday’s games as well as the schedule for the Feb. 25 games can be found in the Scoreboard section on page B2.
