The Skye’s the limit for the Red Raiders, as freshman phenom Skye Shimabukuro netted two goals in Kaua’i’s 2-1 win over Moanalua yesterday on Maui in the first round of the HHSAA/Meadow Gold Dairies Girls State Soccer Championships.
The Menehune jumped out to a 1-0 half-time lead, but the Red Raiders stormed back in the second half, scoring two goals for the victory.
Shimabukuro nailed home goals in the 42nd and 56th minutes of play.
Red Raider goalie Tamalyn Hasegawa fought through four strong Moanalua attempts and managed to attain a save.
Kaua’i converted on two of its seven goal kicks.
Up next for the Red Raiders are the top seeded Kamehameha-O’ahu Warriors, who feature two Kaua’i-born players in Mari Punzal and Sanoe Souza.
Souza, a sophomore, faces some of her former teammates from Kaua’i.
She scored the only goal in the ILH championship game for the 1-0 victory against Punahou.
The two teams clash today at 3 p.m. in quarterfinal action. The winner goes on to the state semifinals on Friday.
