With the Rose Bowl playing its way out during the final stages of the game, so too was the KIF softball game at Isenberg Field last night. In the seventh inning, with Kaua’i up, 6-3, Waimea’s Cassie Koerte belted a two-RBI double, but she was tagged out trying to stretch for third base, which was the second out for the Menehune.
The Red Raiders wound up with the win and finished off the Menehune, 6-5.
A key play for Kaua’i was Cherisse Simeona’s RBI single in the sixth inning, scoring Randi Oketani, which gave the Red Raiders enough cushion for the final frame.
Wailana Borrero picked up the win for Kaua’i and Koerte was handed the loss.
Kaua’i, the first-round champions, improved to 3-0 in the second round. Waimea dropped to 1-1. KIF softball continues on Saturday with doubleheader action between Kapa’a and Waimea at Kapa’a Ballpark, starting at 10 a.m.
