A 38-year-old male visitor from Hamburg, Germany drowned in waters off Polihale State Park on Kaua’i’s Westside Friday, county officials confirmed yesterday.
Scanner reports of a body washed up on shore somewhere on the island could not be confirmed before presstime for the Saturday paper. According to officials with the Kaua’i Police Department, witnesses reported that the victim was swimming in the ocean when a large wave washed over him.
He was not seen again until his body washed to shore, according to county officials. There are no lifeguards at Polihale, and none further west than Kekaha Beach Park.
Emergency medical technicians attempted to revive the victim at the scene, but were unsuccessful, according to a county spokesperson.
The victim was transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the West Kauai Medical Center in Waimea, where he was pronounced dead, the county spokesperson said.
KFD officials said this is the 10th drowning on Kaua’i this year.
