WAIMEA — Waimea High School shortstop Shana Tafiti had two homeruns over the weekend.
One came against the eventual champions of the 20th annual Waimea High School Thanksgiving Invitational Tour-nament Saturday when the transfer from Kaua’i High School belted a Mililani pitch over the fence.
Throughout the tournament, the Trojans were tough, finishing with the trophy and an unblemished tournament record. Along that route, the Trojan pitching staff and defense allowed just three runs in seven games.
Chlorie Igne, one of the tournament leaders as well as a member of the Waimea Softball Boosters organization, noted that Tafiti’s bang was one; the other two came from Kaimuki and Hilo.
Mililani went on to clinch the tournament title Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 win over Campbell.
Waimea, finishing with a 4-2 record, filled in third place, and Moanalua settled in fourth place.
Leading into the Saturday finals, Campbell and Moanalua were both at one-loss, and tournament leaders were anticipating a head-to-head playoff in the White Pool until the Sacred Hearts Lancers downed the Moanalua Menehune, 8-1, and Campbell got past the Lancers, 3-1 to earn the right to face Mililani, the defending Hawai’i High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) champions from 2005.
The Kaua’i High School Red Raiders finished 2-3 overall, their biggest win coming on Thursday when they capitalized on Campbell errors to win 2-0 behind the hitting of Ku’ulei Manintin who drove in Wailana Borrero and Samantha Koga for the icing.
Kaua’i’s second win came at the expense of the Kapa’a Warriors, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Kapa’a finished 0-5 in the tournament, but Igne said they look forward to travelling to the New Kapa’a Ball Park on Wednesday when the Warriors open the KIF season by hosting Waimea, starting at 5:30 p.m.
“They are so enthusiastic,” Igne said of the Kapa’a players.
“It was very rewarding for me to coordinate this tournament and see every young lady enjoy themselves as well as being able to meet new and old friends,” Igne added.
