The Martin triplets, Rachel, Scott and Nathan, led the Waimea High School JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) squad to the championship of the Baldwin JROTC Triathlon at Baldwin High School on Maui recently.
Scott Martin took second place overall, and Nathan Martin third, with strong support from fellow cadets Rachel Martin and Kelly Joyce.
Waimea High School JROTC instructor, 1st Sgt. Michael Rowland, accompanied the cadets.
The triathlon consisted of a two-mile run, 300-meter swim, and an obstacle course consisting of a 1/2-mile up-hill run on sand, sixfoot vertical wall, tire obstacle course, balance beam, low crawl, culminating with a race across a 30-foot-long, single- strand rope bridge.
A total of 19, four-person teams from all over Hawai’i competed in this triathlon.
The Waimea High School JROTC squad members’ average time for the entire course was 21 minutes 34 seconds.
Scott Martin finished second overall, in 19:19, and Nathan Martin finished right after his brother, in 20:10.
Members of the JROTC team Moanalua High School placed second, with an average time of 22:22, and also had the first-place overall finisher, in 16:41.
In third place were members of the Kalaheo High School JROTC team, with an average time of 23:58.
The top three individuals each received trophies, as did members of the top three teams.
