Emily Kaohi Iwata
Emily Kapunohuulaokala Kaohi Iwata of Hanapepe, died Sept. 29, 2005, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 90.
Born Dec. 21, 1914, in Honolulu, she retired from Hawaiian Telephone Company where she worked for 37-1/2 years.
Preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. Iwata and her daughter Lorna Naomi Iwata, she is survived by son: Paul S. Iwata, Jr.; daughter: Alma Mae (David) Silver; six brothers: Dudie, Enoka, William and Clarence of Kaua’i, Ellsworth of Kona and Ronald of Honolulu; three sisters: Betty Kaleohano of Kaua’i, Mercy Ching of Kaua’i, and Arlene Naholoholo of California; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church where services will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Hanapepe Hawaiian Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Karen McGuire
Karen LeeMarie McGuire of Hanapepe died Oct. 1, 2005, at her home at the age of 67.
Born Feb. 23, 1938, in Oregon, she was a nurse aid for Home Health.
Preceded in death by her husband, Larry McGuire, son Patrick and grandson Dennis, she is survived by hanai children: Trudi (Earl) Kilar of Hanapepe; Sheila Freitas of Hanapepe; caregiver also grandson, Kawika (Carnation) Kilar of Hanapepe; granddaughter: Christina Jones of Oregon and one great-grandchild.
Private services will be held. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Antonio ‘Tony’ Ponce
Antonio “Tony” Rosco Ponce died at his home in Kapa’a on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at the age of 76.
Born in Kapa’a on Feb. 14, 1929, he was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Cresencia Ponce, and by his brothers, Malvino and Ernest Ponce.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret K. Ponce; daughter Cynthia (Ken) of Honolulu; sons: Kenneth (Marielle) of Kapa’a, Anthony (Debbee) of Honolulu, Marvyn (Debbie) of Kapa’a, and Davin (Julie) of Kapa’a; 10 grandchildren, two great-grand-children, sisters, Mary Albao of California and Lauretta Pesquira of O’ahu, brother: Richard (Miki) Ponce of California, nieces, nephews, his “Hulihuli Gang” and many friends.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa’a. Services will start at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Kealia.

Isabella R. Silva
Isabella R. Silva of Lihu’e, died Sept. 26, 2005, at Straub Hospital at the age of 77.
Born May 7, 1928, in Kapahi, she was a homemaker.
Preceded in death by her husband, William I. Silva, she is survived by seven children: Naomi (Manuel) Empraso, William S. Silva, Diane (Don) Okuno, Dean (Glenda) Silva, Leila (Julian) Fernandez-Cardoso; Jewel (Solomon) Kalima, and Daniel K. Silva; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grand-children; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa where services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Kaua’i Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
William R. Geffert
William (Bill) R. Geffert of Lihu’e, died on Friday, Sept. 23, in his home at the age of 61.
Born May 16, 1944, and raised in Stratford, Conn., he had a lifetime career in the food and beverage industry. He owned and operated a catering business with his sister for over 20 years, retiring seven years ago and relocating to Kaua’i to help his brother at the Nawiliwili Tavern in Lihu’e.
He is survived by his brother, Jay Geffert of Kaua’i and sister, Carol Murdzia of Mildford, Conn., and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Carmela Tangonan
Carmela Fiesta Tangonan of Lihu’e died at Wilcox Hospital on Sept. 30, 2005 at the age of 80. Born on April 19, 1925, in Laoag City, Philippines, she was a dedicated homemaker.
She is survived by one daughter Erlinda (Flor) Tangonan-Salvador of Lihu’e, two sisters; Carlina (Basilio) Ballesteros and Angie Jose of the Philippines.
Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Immaculate Conception Church from 9 a.m. with Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. by Fr. Shannon.
Burial to follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens in Kapaia.
