This is in response to the letter “Who makes the rules? You choose” from Dr. Peter Saker.
I’m sure that Dr. Saker is a fine, well-educated man. However, he is a dentist and, as such, unqualified to declare the Theory of Evolution to be ‘impossible.’ Sadly, that is usually the case with creationists … so few of them are qualified to speak on the subject of evolution. The evidence for evolution is so strong that it is accepted as fact. Dr. Saker reminds me of the boy standing in a fierce wind, crying, “There is no wind! There is no wind!” But he can’t be heard because he is overwhelmed by the power of the wind.
If I have a toothache, I go to a dentist. If I have questions about religion, I go to those responsible for perpetuating the myths of religion … priests, ministers, etc. If I have questions about evolution, I go to qualified sources as well. I encourage anybody who is interested in the Theory of Evolution to use credible sources such as evolutionary biologists Douglas Futuyma or Richard Dawkins.
Dr. Saker also claims that “God makes the rules.” Actually, it is man who has made God. Then man uses the name of God to justify his own actions. History is full of atrocities committed in the name of God. To me, there is nothing more dangerous than a man who claims to do what his God has commanded. Such a person is acting outside of society and civil law. He believes he is answering to a ‘higher law.’ He becomes a fanatic.
