HONOLULU — Dr. Jim Barahal, President of the Honolulu Marathon Association, said today that he will offer the father of an Ewa Beach Little League player $3,000 to help him get back on his feet after the player’s father quit his job in order to accompany the Ewa Beach team to the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania.
Barahal not only heads up America’s third largest marathon, but himself is the father of a Kailua Little League player. He also played Little League in Michigan, and was coached by his father.
Myron Enos had no choice but to do what he did, Barahal said.
“It would have been akin to missing your daughter’s wedding not to go,” said Barahal.
“Any father who has the chance to see his son play in the Little League World Series just has to go. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Barahal has not yet been able to contact Enos.
“This donation will be on behalf of the marathon because we support all youth sports,” he said.
Barahal also wants to feature the entire Ewa Beach team at the Honolulu Marathon Expo on Dec. 10 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, and present the league with a cash donation.
He added that if it is allowable, he will outfit each youngster with $150 worth of clothes by Nike, a marathon sponsor. Additionally, he will present 50 tickets to the team to be special guests at the Honolulu Marathon’s Luau/Concert at the Waikiki Shell on Dec. 9.
The Ewa Beach team made Hawai‘i history when they battled back twice against Curacao before finally clinching the Series title on a walk-off homerun by catcher Michael Memea in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 7-6 victory.
