“Wonderful” times three is how former President Bill Clinton, his wife, U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-New York, and daughter Chelsea Clinton, described their Wednesday-evening meal at Postcards Cafe in Hanalei.
They all wrote personal comments in the restaurant’s guest book. “It was really wonderful,” Bill Clinton wrote. “The most wonderful meal in a most beautiful setting,” Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote. “Thank you! Truly wonderful,” Chelsea Clinton penned.
Joining the former first family were Pierce and Keely Brosnan, part-time North Shore residents, along with an aide to the Clintons, according to Marti and Joe Paskal, restaurant owners.
Chef Brandon Reed and Sous Chef Larissa Varaday prepared coconut-crusted monchong (big-scale pomfret, a tropical fish not too common in Hawaiian waters) with macadamia-nut crab salad and mango sauce, cilantro rice and baby bok choy for the former president.
Both Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton enjoyed coconut-curry tofu with coconut rice and coconut-curry sauce, with Chelsea Clinton asking for and receiving shrimp in that creation, while the senator’s was full-vegetarian fare, Reed said.
The Clintons were on a sunset sail before dining out, and casually spoke with other patrons, signing autographs and posing for photographs with one family with young sons.
Reed said he and Varady were nervous when the restaurant owners brought them out to meet the Clintons, but found members of the former first family to be very friendly.
It was confirmed yesterday that Bill Clinton, known as “Bubba” for his affable nature, did eat at Bubba Burgers, also posing for pictures there and signing autographs.
