Former President Bill Clinton, his wife, U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-New York, and daughter Chelsea, have been vacationing this week on the Garden Island.
The former president was seen hiking on Na Pali Coast-Kalalau Trail on Monday, and playing golf at Princeville, all the while with U.S. Secret Service agents at the ready.
A North Shore resident said she spotted Sen. Clinton and daughter Chelsea dining at The Hanalei Gourmet, and otherwise enjoying the Princeville area.
Other North Shore residents could not help but notice the presence of a number of Secret Service agents assigned to the Clintons. One person who approached an agent was given a Secret Service pin as a souvenir.
Reportedly, there was also a large truck parked near the private residence reportedly owned by Vinod Gupta, where the Clintons are or were staying.
Calls to the Gupta residence in Ha‘ena requesting information on the Clintons’ visit were directed to Sen. Clinton’s press secretary, Philippe Reines. Reines could not be reached for comment Wednesday at his Washington, D.C., office.
There were unconfirmed reports that Chelsea Clinton was joined by her fiancé.
Clinton was reportedly last on Kaua‘i in 2002, stumping for then Democratic gubernatorial candidate Maizie Hirono.
Sen. Clinton, a potential Democratic Party presidential nominee in 2008, visited Kaua‘i in 1993 in the aftermath of Hurricane ‘Iniki.
No word on whether the former president known affectionately as “Bubba” for his down-to-earth tastes, sampled the wares of a local hamburger purveyor of the same name.
