Ikaika Basketball with coach Clay Tang at the helm repeated as the champions of the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association (KYBA) Second Annual Girls Under 14 tournament that wrapped up Saturday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
With an undefeated record, Ikaika sewed up the championship with a 36-18 win over Team Swish, a much closer game than their 41-13 opening encounter, Thursday night.
Following the tournament, KYBA officials named the all-tournament MVP’s that saw Kelsie Cadiente of Team Swish make the MVP list, the only player from Kaua‘i to get that honor. Other MVP’s came from Ikaika Basketball who saw Paige Young, Chloe Martin, and Chelsy Okuma presented with MVP awards.
Earlier in the day, Ikaika Basketball downed Wailua 50-8 behind Young’s 10 points. Wailua got three marks from Britney Salvador in the effort.
Leilani Laranio lit up the boards for Wailua, Friday night when the girls in green topped Gee’s Angels, 63-11 with Gabby Matayoshi leading the Angels on six points.
Other Saturday games saw Team Swish finish with just their losses to Ikaika as they got past the Gee’s Angels, 42-18 behind Kelsie Cadiente’s 11 points. Matayoshi sparked the Angels with six points in the effort.
Cadiente also topped Team Swish’s Friday night 29-21 win over the Westside Hornets who got seven points from Reesha Banasihan.
Waimea guard Jaime Jacinto and Sera Pascual each finished with eight points to lead Waimea to a 35-18 win over the Westside Hornets who got seven points from Kierra Barba.
On Friday night, Waimea was the victim of Ikaika Basketball, 46-28 with Young again leading the Ikaika effort with 11 points. Erin Connelly topped Waimea’s scoring on six points that night.
