Local charities were the beneficiaries of the Annual Big Save/Richard Kawakami Memorial Golf Tournament that was played recently at the Kaua‘i Lagoons, Mokihana Golf Course.
Charles Kawakami made the presentations during the awards program that followed the day-long event attended by numerous manufacturer and vendor representatives, some flying in from off-island to be part of the festivities.
Kaua‘i Hospice was the biggest beneficiary with the organization getting two checks at the end of the day. Proceeds generated by the golf tournament was presented to Gina Kaulukukui in the amount of $10,000.
Additionally, with the recent groundbreaking for a hospice center on Kaua‘i, the Big Save, Inc. family of stores presented Kaua‘i Hospice with an additional $25,000 to help with their building fund.
Other recipients from the golf tournament included the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Program who was represented by Russell Furusho, the Special Olympics program who was represented by Jennifer Arashiro, the Kaua‘i Community College Foundation represented by Shirley Tani, and Hale Opio.
The junior golf and Special Olympics programs were each awarded $4,000 each while KCC Foundation and Hale Opio each accepted checks for $2,000.
Additionally, golfers entered in the tournament were eligible to receive their own personal awards following the formal presentations to the various Kaua‘i organizations.
Several of the golfers noted that the Annual Big Save/Richard Kawakami Memorial Golf Tournament might be the biggest golf tournament on the island.
