• Vroom and congratulations to Tom Leighton and everyone at Two Wheels in Kapaa on their 25th anniversary. Speaking of motorcycles, I am reminded of the 1953 movie “The Wild One” starring Marlon Brando as biker gang member. At one point in the movie a “square” looks at Brando and asks, “what are you rebellin’ against?” Brando’s classic response? “Whaddya got?”

The Public Utilities Commission posts its first gas prices in accordance with the state gas cap law on Wednesday. The prices, set for different zones and different grades of gasoline, can seen on the PUC’s Web site. The gas cap law goes into effect Sept. 1.

Cruise ships calling on Nawiliwili

• Tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 22, the Pride of Aloha, 850 feet long, calls on Nawiliwili Harbor, arriving at 7 a.m. and remaining overnight, leaving Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. This Thursday, Aug. 25, the Pride of America, 965 feet long, arrives at 8 a.m., remains overnight, and departs Friday, Aug. 26, at 6 p.m.

Rotary Club of Kalepa makes donation for Cebu surgeries

• Rotary crosses borders to do good work. Rebecca Allen, President of the Rotary Club of Kalepa Sunrise is shown here accepting a check for $1,000 from Dr. David Russell, President of the Dental Society of Kauai. The money will pay for the surgical repair of two children born with cleft lips or cleft palate during the Rotaplast medical mission to Cebu, Philippines beginning September 7. Kauai participants in the mission are Dr. Michael Johnston and nurse Janette Wolff of Kapaa, Dr. Larry Reichel of Hanalei and Allen. This Rotary club mission hopes to repair deformities in 100 indigent children allowing them to look, speak and eat normally.

Kapaa Rotary Club plans cleanup

• The Kapaa Rotary Club, sponsors of Taste of Hawai‘i will be cleaning up the Wailua River Boat Launch Park Saturday Aug. 27. The project begins at 8 a.m. and will end at noon. The public is welcome to come out and help. For more info contact Tony Cook at 634-9052.

Poipu Bay names Kennedy outstanding employee

• David Kennedy has been named Poipu Bay Golf Course’s Employee of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2005. Kennedy is a Pro Shop Clerk and has been with Poipu Bay since 1998.

Kennedy was nominated for the honor by his supervisor, Don Renteria. “I can always count on David to show great leadership in the opening and the closing of the Golf Shop,” said Renteria. “He has been instrumental in the training of the staff in daily procedures, and he has a way with our guests—always demonstrating ‘Aloha Spirit’ while paying strict attention to our policies. I can count on David to be at work every day and to cover the days he is not scheduled to work, with little or no advance notice. His continuous quest for excellence and attention to detail is an inspiration.”

Poipu Bay’s quarterly employee awards are based on nominations made by department supervisors, commending employees in the areas of attendance, conscientiousness, attitude, efficiency, innovation, guest service and aloha spirit. Kennedy received a variety of gifts as part of the award and is recognized on a plaque that is displayed at the Poipu Bay Clubhouse.

Island Air expands agreement with United Airlines

• Island Air has finalized an agreement to expand code sharing with United Airlines that will make it easier for United’s customers to fly anywhere in Hawaii.

Island Air’s extensive inter-island flight schedule, serving more destinations in Hawaii than any other airline, will provide increased flexibility and convenience to United passengers booking travel to and within the state of Hawaii.

The new code share agreement increases the number of daily flights operated by Island Air. Passengers booking through United will now be able to check in once and fly to all of Island Air’s destinations — Honolulu, Maui (Kahului and Kapalua), Hawaii (Kona and Hilo), Kauai (Lihue), and Lanai and Molokai. Members of Mileage Plus, United’s frequent flier program, can continue to earn and redeem mileage on all Island Air flights

The partnership will help Hawaii’s visitor industry, said Frank Haas, director of tourism marketing at the Hawaii Tourism Authority. “Anytime you have the opportunity for a strong local carrier like Island Air to partner with a major carrier like United Airlines, it strengthens the marketing of Hawaii and makes this destination ever more solidly top of mind,” he said.

United Airlines is the world’s second-largest airline and operates more than 3,400 flights a day on United, United Express and Ted to more than 200 U.S. domestic and international destinations. The expanded code share with Island Air will perfectly complement United’s nonstop service to

Hawaii from its hubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Denver. With 24 daily flights from these three hub cities to four Hawaiian Islands — Oahu, Maui, Hawaii and Kauai — United offers more flights between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii than any other airline. United also offers daily, non-stop service between Honolulu and both Tokyo and Osaka. United has been serving Hawaii since 1947.

Island Air is Hawaii’s leading regional carrier, serving more destinations in the state of Hawaii than any other airline worldwide. Island Air currently offers 88 daily flights between Honolulu, Molokai, Lanai, Kapalua, Kahului, Kona, Hilo and Lihue.

“Chromecoming” for Two Wheels 25th anniversary

DOL offers drug-free workplace source

• The U.S. Department of Labor is encouraging employers to use its Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Web site to help them establish drug-free workplace programs that protect worker safety and health, while improving productivity and bottom-line profits.

Of the nation’s 16.6 million adult illicit drug users, 12.4 million (74.6 percent) work either full or part time, according to recently released results of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) 2002 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Such drug use can adversely impact the workplace. For example, in 2000, workers reporting past month drug use were more likely to have worked for more than three employers in a year, missed work more than two days in the past month due to illness or injury, and skipped work more than two days in the past month.

Employers can protect their businesses from these negative effects by developing drug-free workplace programs that educate employees about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse and encourage individuals with related problems to seek help. DOL’s Working Partners Web site provides employers with free resources and tools to help establish and maintain such programs.

“As an online resource, Working Partners helps workers and employers work together to ensure a safe and drug-free environment for families, schools, and communities,” Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao said.

The Working Partners Web site features the Drug-Free Workplace Advisor, an interactive tool that helps employers build tailored, drug-free work-place policies and programs; the Substance Abuse Information Database, an online repository of hundreds of documents related to workplace alcohol and drug abuse; information about substance abuse and how it affects employment; and directories of national, state and local resources and state laws that may assist employers in making their businesses drug free.

Lingle appoints Yahiro

• Governor Linda Lingle has appointed Sandra Yahiro to serve as deputy director of the Department of Taxation. Yahiro, who has worked for the Department of the Attorney General as administrative services manger since the beginning of this year, has been employed with the State of Hawai`i for 14 years.

Yahiro worked as the personnel officer for the Department of Taxation from 2003 to 2004 where she was responsible for all human resources functions, including recruitment, job classification, labor relations and employee relations.

In 2004, Yahiro was named the State of Hawai`i Manager of the Year for her exceptional achievements in building a more productive workforce within the Tax Department. In receiving the award, Yahiro was credited with helping to resolve some of the department’s difficult labor relations cases. In addition, when the Taxpayer Services Branch was faced with having to fill a number of positions to staff its newly created one-stop service, Yahiro creatively found a way to quickly fill the approximately 90 vacancies.

Yahiro also was a personnel program officer for the Department of Human Resources Development from 1991 to 2003. Before joining the State, she was the personnel manager for the Honolulu Community Action Program.

“Sandi has been an outstanding manager and invaluable resource to the state, having served in three different departments,” said Lingle. “She is known for her leadership skills, her dedication to improving service to the public, and her ability to motivate employees to enhance their performance. We are fortunate to have Sandi step forward to increase her role in our Administration.”

Yahiro currently serves as a trustee for the state of Hawai`i Deferred Compensation Plan.

Yahiro will replace outgoing deputy director Marie Laderta, who the Governor appointed to be the director of the Department of Human Resources Development to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Kathleen Watanabe, who was sworn in last week as Circuit Court judge on Kaua`i. Yahiro will start her new Wednesday.

List of registered fundraisers

• A list of registered and bonded professional solicitors who solicit Hawaii donors on behalf of charitable organizations, or fundraising counsels who assist with Hawaii fundraising campaigns is now available on via the Attorney General’s Internet site.

This is the first time that both Hawaii charitable organizations and donors can access this information in a readily available form and through the Internet.

The list also includes registered solicitors and fundraising counsels for mainland charitable organizations that solicit Hawaii donors. Any person who, for a fee, solicits Hawaii donors on behalf of a charitable organization or any consultant that provides advice or assistance in connection with such a campaign, must register with the Attorney General and file a $25,000 bond.

The law does not require salaried employees of a charity to register. Any charity may terminate any contract with unregistered fundraiser and charitable solicitation by unregistered fundraisers constitutes an unfair and deceptive trade practice under the State’s consumer protection laws. Any knowing or intentional failure to register is a criminal offense and may be punished as provided by law.
