With the 2004 state title in hand, the Kaua‘i Jr. Lifeguards are looking to add another title this season, but this time, on their home turf at Kalapaki Beach, today.
“I was sick at the island championships, but I’ll be ready for states,” Kaua‘i Jr. Lifeguard participant Eric Oroc said.
Oroc, who won the beach flags island title, should contend for the state medal as well.
Fronting Duke’s Restaurant, the championships will start around 9 a.m.
Right about the same time, another huge water event, put on by Mokihana Aquatics, will take center stage at Kaua‘i High School’s pool.
The annual Fun Meet has a new feature this year, with the first-ever Kahu Kai Fastest Swimmer competition.
Participants will swim 50 yards freestyle for the first-prize of $500.
Ben Baldwin, a first time Jr. Lifeguard participant, is also a Mokihana Aquatics swimmer.
This year, Baldwin will try to help the Kaua‘i Jr. Lifeguards to the top.
Veterans like Emma Makepa-Foley and Jackie Brady will lead the girls’ squad, as they go for the gold. Catch all the water dominated action today at the annual Fun Meet, starting at 9 a.m. with the fastest swimmer contest and the state Jr. Lifeguard championships at Kalapaki Beach.
