KAPA‘A — Wailua capitalized on the wind-at-their-back, and a short Cool Runnings team to take a 2-1 win, Tuesday night at the New Kapa‘a Ball Park.
That victory forces another game as both teams now share a 1-loss tie. Had Cool Runnings been successful over Wailua, the season would have ended with the final whistle, but with the tie in standings, another game will take place next Tuesday starting at 7 p.m.
With the brisk trades in back of them, Wailua reversed the tables on Cool Runnings who dominated the previous week’s game in offense.
Ashley Green took a pass from their forward for the first goal that came just four minutes into the contest as the Wailua forward thwarted the Cool Runnings defense by passing off to the right wing for the score.
Curtis Langstaff iced the first-half scoring for Wailua in the 23rd minute as darkness shrouded the field at the New Kapa‘a Ball Park, the game delayed due to ongoing practice by the Kapa‘a Pop Warner Association. Despite the delay, the Cool Runnings team never reached full strength, and following a halftime agreement between coaches and the coed league lead official, Anthony Tenngelder, two more players joined the ranks of Cool Runnings.
Bolstered by the additional players, and with the wind at their backs for the second half, Cool Runnings made a run to erase the 2-goal deficit. As the clock ticked down, Cool Runnings made a concerted effort to tie the contest and force the overtime, and possibly a shootout, but could not get past the Wailua defense.
Game time for the finale is 7 p.m. next Tuesday at the New Kapa‘a Ball Park.
