Don’t miss out on Bunga’s chicken
By The Garden Island
If you haven’t tried the famous “Bunga’s Chicken,” well here’s your chance to kill two birds with one stone.
Waimea High School’s athletic department, in conjunction with Wal-Mart’s 10-year anniversary, will showcase a fund-raiser benefiting the Menehune athletic program on August 6 at Wal-Mart.
It’s just $6 per half chicken, and for tickets, contact athletic director Jon Kobayashi at 338-6804, Menehune head football coach Liko Perreira at 338-6810 ext. 180, or any of his assistants.
Ekolu Adult tennis meeting
A captain’s meeting for the Ekolu Adult League will be scheduled on Sunday, August 7, at 1 p.m. at Kiahuna Beach and Tennis Club. The Ekolu League consists of women’s, men’s and a mixed doubles team. League season will begin from August 13 thru October 30. Sectionals will be held on December 3-4 at the University of Hawai‘i.
Captains will be asked to submit their initial rosters and be prepared to schedule their matches. Contact Carolyn at kkoa97@yahoo.com or call 245-9661 for any inquiries.
Hawai‘i’s next big thing
Hawai‘i coach June Jones is known for enthusiastic praise of his young players, but he’s already predicting incredibly big things for troubled freshman receiver Davone Bess.
“After just 15 days of spring ball, I think he might be the best player at wide receiver that I’ve ever had,” Jones said. “He’s that good.”
That’s no small praise from a coach who’s worked with Andre Rison, Drew Hill, Ashley Lelie and Chad Owens.
Bess graduated from Oakland’s Skyline High School in 2003 but spent last season in trouble with the law, including time in a juvenile detention camp. With his problems apparently behind him, Bess could immediately provide help for Jones’ high-powered offense as it rebuilds without quarterback Timmy Chang and Owens.
Kapa‘a Pop Warner registration
There will be a general membership meeting on Wednesday, August 10, 5:30 p.m. at the Armory Park Pavillion.

UH football squad opens camp
The University of Hawai‘i Warrior football team will begin fall practice, Friday at 4 p.m. on the UH Grass Practice Fields.
The Warriors have 25 days to prepare for the Sept. 3 season opener against two-time defending national champion USC at Aloha Stadium. A total of 10 starters return to lead the Warriors in 2005.
The biggest question mark is who will get the starting nod at quarterback to replace the record-setting Timmy Chang who finished his collegiate career as the NCAA’s all-time leading passer with 17,072 yards.
The top two candidates are redshirt freshman Tyler Graunke (5-11, 179) and junior college transfer Colt Brennan (6-3, 205).
According to the WAC Coaches’ Poll, the Warriors are picked to finish third in the conference, behind Boise St. and Fresno St., which were picked to finish tied for first.
