LIHU‘E — “It’s good to come back home,” former University of Hawai‘i pitching coach Carl Furutani said yesterday at the first-ever UH baseball clinic held on the island.
Furutani, a Waimea High School graduate, has family on Kaua‘i and mentioned that when he was asked to come down to do a clinic on Kaua‘i, he was all for it.
“This is a great opportunity for the kids,” Furutani said.
UH’s Les Nakamura, Thomas Gushiken, Paul Ah Yat, and Daryl Masanda joined Furutani at the three-day baseball clinic, which continues today through Thursday at the Vidinha Stadium baseball field.
Just a few years ago, Furutani was still rocking in the dugout as the pitching coach for the Rainbows.
“At the beginning when I first got out of coaching (at UH), I missed it, but I realized that now I get to spend more time with my family,” Furutani noted.
The clinic, which is part of the Hawai‘i Speed and Quickness series, is free to Kaua‘i youths, who are seven years of age and older.
There will also be a special coaches clinic today, going from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
