Els to miss rest of season after knee surgery
SOUTHPORT, England — Ernie Els will miss the rest of the golf season following knee surgery, his management team said Friday. The third-ranked South African had surgery on his left knee Thursday after sustaining an injury while on a sailing holiday last week, a spokesman for International Sports Management said Friday.
On his doctor’s recommendation, Els has withdrawn from his tournament schedule in order to recover, the ISM statement said.
There was no indication how long Els would be out of action, although it was believed he might not return until December. That would mean he would miss the PGA and NEC Championships next month, as well as the Tour Championship and European events such as the World Match Play Championship at Wentworth in England.
Woods’ 61 at Buick Open ties personal record
GRAND BLANC, Mich. — Tiger Woods shot an 11-under 61 Friday in the second round of the Buick Open, matching the best round of his career and the tournament record.
Woods, who opened with a 71 Thursday, heads into the weekend 12 under, one shot behind defending champion Vijay Singh. His previous 61s came at the 2000 NEC Invitational and the 1999 Byron Nelson Classic. He tied the Buick Open record Billy Mayfair set in 2001.
The world’s top-ranked golfer turned a good round — 5-under 31 at the turn — into a spectacular one with an eagle-eagle-birdie-birdie stretch between the 13-16th holes.
“That was a nice little bonus” he said.
WAC unveils new marketing campaign
DENVER, Colo. — Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson announced the launch of a new marketing concept and campaign. This aggressive campaign will feature the WAC’s new tagline “Play Up.” Extensive internal and external research revealed that each of the WAC’s members had strong affinity to the ideals of improving both athletically and academically and that its conference is a major contributor in reaching those goals. The term “Play Up” captures the essence of the desires of the members to move their programs from good to great or from great to exemplary.
The “Play Up” campaign will seek to improve the public and private perceptions of the WAC and its members through national, local and regional touch points.
“The research showed us that the WAC has strong brand recognition, but that it also means different things to different people,” said Benson. “This campaign will provide a consistent message aimed at clarifying the WAC brand.”
The “Play Up” campaign will be multifaceted and includes some changes that have already been announced, including the new WAC logo and website. In addition, the WAC has developed a specific Play Up logo that will accompany the WAC mark across multiple platforms, including letterhead, business cards, website banner, pop up displays, and ingame promotions.
