The Kaiola Canoe Club’s 12-and-under boys squad won the island championship and will head to Maui for the state competition on August 6.
“They took first-place beating Hanalei Canoe Club by just a minute or so,” Yvonne Summerfield said.
“It’s the closest race I’ve ever seen.” Four of the six boys have been paddling together for the last three years and an island championship was what they had been working hard for.
“Coach Joe does a fantastic job with these kids,” Summerfield said. Her son 11-year-old son Taylor has been paddling since the age of seven and has never been able to compete for a state championship.
“He is extremely happy and excited to go to Maui to compete,” Summerfield said.
Team members include: Taylor Summerfield, Joshua Beeksma, Jonathan Taitano, Kyle Mc-Donald, Robert Ludington, and Matthew Heller.
