The Kaua‘i Babe Ruth All Stars are taking part in its Regional tournament which takes place in Watsonville, California.
That tournament begins today with Kaua‘i facing Central California in the eight-team double elimination tournament.
Other teams participating in the tournament include representatives from Arizona, Nevada, Northern California, Southern California, Utah, and Watsonville, Calif.
According to Lonnie Oketani, one of the parents of this year’s all star players, the last time a Kaua‘i team captured the state title was in 1994 when a Koloa Pony team returned with the gold. Warren Arakaki was at the helm of that victorious squad.
Team members making the trip to California include Travis Fontanilla, Stanton Yoshimori, Dustin Pagador, Michael Ishibashi, Shannon Oketani, Cody Goias, Shawn Yadao, Ray Shirai, Bradley Frasco, LZ Zalopany, Robbie Correia, Jake Oketani, and Garren Itamura.
Scott Serizawa is the head coach and Stan Yoshimori is on the coaching staff.
The Kaua‘i Babe Ruth All Stars earned the right to advance to the Regional playoffs after sweeping the Big Island All Stars in a two-game sweep, recently at Vidinha Stadium, Kaua‘i coming back from a 5-1 deficit in the second game to nail the victory in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI from Stanton Yoshimori that pushed pinch runner Travis Fontanilla across the plate for the winning run.
