Forty two boats turned out for the annual Port Allen Fishing Derby on July 16. The theme for this year’s derby was “Support Our Troops.” Starting time was 6 a.m. All boats had to return to the harbor by 4 p.m. and all fish weighted in by 5 p.m. Winners were listed in 5 categories with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for each. The categories were Marlin, Ahi, Ono, Mahi-Mahi and Aku.
The first place Marlin went to Captain Alan Horikawa with a nice 291.5 lbs. fish. Alan also won the prize for the overall largest fish and 3rd place for his 196.5 lb. Ahi.
Captain Mike Gonsalves won first place in the Ahi category with a beautiful 202 pounder. The second and third place Ahi winners were separated by only a half point with Captain Tiani Kajiwara landing a 196 lbs. Ahi for second place.
Captain Darrell Rapozo caught the only Mahi to sweep 1st, 2nd and 3rd with a 17 lbs. Mahi. First place for Ono went to Captain Daryl Medeiros for his 42.7 lbs. Ono. The largest Aku weighed 24.2 lbs. and won a first place prize for Captain Keala Lanning.
The Carol Ann captained by Jimmy Horner didn’t make the winners list but managed to catch 3 Ahi all over 100 lbs. Congratulations to all the derby winners and their crews!
The awards ceremony and grand luau went late into the night with lots of happy fishermen, crew and families. Every team went home with a prize because of all the donations by their generous vendors.
It was a great day of fishing, celebration, ono-grinds and talk-story late into the evening. Everyone is looking forward to next year’s derby.
