NAWILIWILI — A delivery van accidentally backed into a fire hydrant causing a spectacular geyser of water briefly between the Kaua‘i Food Bank facility and Island Liquidators in Nawiliwili.
The accident that happened shortly after 3:30 p.m. is not a rarity, according to workers at both places.
But, according to one of Island Liquidators’ employees, it can be expensive. “The last time someone backed into the hydrant, we had to pay $6,000.”
One of the Food Bank employees who dialed 9-1-1 about the incident said, they were asked if sparks were evident.
And, although sloshing through the growing pool of water to cool down from the 85-degree heat might have seemed like a good way to end the work week, a passing electrician who stopped to check on the situation, said, “Don’t go in the water! There’s 12,000 volts going through there.”
The fountain was capped before 4 p.m.
