It will be quite a sight at the Puakea Golf Course on July 31, with every pin on the golf course flying the American flag, symbolizing support for our troops, most notably, the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, a group that’s comprised mostly of Kaua‘i residents.
The 2nd Annual Wala‘au Red, White, and Blue Golf Tournament gives people the chance to not only show support for our troops, but for the students and faculty of Kalaheo Elementary School.
“Last year, everyone held the flag pin up and never laid it on the ground. I’ve been to many (golf) tournaments and I’ve never seen that before, which is amazing to see, just the pride that goes along with the pins carrying the American flag,” Wala‘au’s Dickie Chang said.
Both Queenie Pezario of the Hawaii Army National Guard and Stephanie Rogers of Kalaheo Elementary School were honored to have the tournament benefit their respective causes.
“It’s awesome for Wala‘au and Dickie to come to us and ask us to do this,” Pezario said.
Rogers, who is the PTSA President for the southside school, mentioned that the proceeds from the tournament will go towards supplies and basically everything that the school lost in the fire that happened earlier this year.
“Our school has received great support from the community and Dickie’s event is another great benefit for us, so we’d like to thank him for doing this,” Rogers said.
The three person scramble will commence at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start. Entry fee is $100 per player or $300 per team. Besides the many door prizes and silent auction, there’s a Las Vegas vacation for two at stake and a special prize for the best dressed patriotic team.
Not a golfer? Well, spouses, and others are welcomed to join the crew for the “Sunday Party in the Country” Lunch and Festivities for a $15 donation per person.
