To get ready for the Fourth of July fireworks, 808 Fight Factory’s Keli‘i Newalu and Frank Shamrock Academy’s Brian Badgerow will showcase their own fireworks at Kapa‘a High School’s Gym on July 3.
The “Warriors Quest” battle was planned long ago by promoters and fight officials in hopes of making it a quarterly event.
“It’s just promoting the sport and our sport has less injuries than football or boxing, plus our referees are highly trained and certified, so they keep it safe,” promoter Dennis Bohner said.
Back in December, the same group of promoters brought a plethora of talented fighters to Waimea High School’s Gym. A different promotion company hosted group from Hilo at Kapa‘a’s Gym.
“It’s a growing sport and we’re just trying to get Kaua‘i involved with Mixed Martial Arts,” Bohner said.
General admission is $25, with ring-side seats at $35 a pop. The first of many fights will start off at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Island Tatoo, Hair Cuts Waimea, and Hair Razors.
“We’re trying to get guys from Kaua‘i to fight, but they opted out and said they’ll do it in the future; there are lots of good schools on the island,” Bohner said.
