KALAHEO — For the eight Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association (KYBA) boys 14 and Under teams, and the five girls 14 and Under teams, the season comes to a head this week with the championship games scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
The top four seeds in the girls teams were involved in a playoff, Monday night to determine the team positions for the Wednesday night title fight.
Third place game starts at 6 p.m. with the championship being determined in the 7 p.m. contest. A Girls 16 and Under contest featuring the Westside Hornets and the Kaua‘i Fire Raiders round out the triple bill starting at 8 p.m.
Boys playoffs start Tuesday to determine the teams involved in the Thursday night championship game which will tip off at 7 p.m.
The battle for third place will tip off beginning at 6 p.m. with another Girls 16 and Under contest rounding out the triple bill. The finale will pit Gee’s Angels against Waimea “B.”
The 14 and Under KYBA season started in mid-May.
Teams involved in league play included coach Talbert Tacbian coaching both the Wailua I and Wailua II for the Girls 14 Under program. Team Swish was under the direction of Dave Hamamura with Clarence Sales and Alex Naumu, Waimea was coached by Bobby Kamakele, and Maynard Shea was at the helm of the Westside Hornets.
In the boys’ program, Edwin Yasay coached the Hanama‘ulu Boys, Greg Meyers piloted Island School, Kim Nichols built the skills of the Waimea Rimrockers, Billy Ramos lit the Lihu‘e On Fire, Cecil Gee was behind the G-Unit, Tacbian managed Wailua, Daniel Simao bossed C-Town, and Steven Matsumoto guided Kalaheo.
