KALAHEO — Kathleen Cadiente’s field goal with ten ticks on the clock pushed Team Swish to a 27-25 win in the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association’s (KYBA) 14 and Under Girls game that opened a Thursday night triple bill at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
“We had several chances, but the shots wouldn’t drop,” said Kori Sakamoto, a Waimea team member following their heartbreaker. “But, we’re still the top seed (based on win-loss records).”
Mai‘lika Napoleon fueled the Team Swish win with nine points followed by Sanoe Keli‘inoi and Jondi Das adding six points apiece. Kathleen Cadiente finished with four points, including that crucial final second bucket, and a pair by sister Kelsey Cadiente rounded out the math.
Natalie Mata topped the Waimea scoring with a game-high 11 points with Aiko Grande adding seven, and Sakamoto finishing with five points. A pair from Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade closed the books.
Justin Ramos and Clareson Torres finished with ten points apiece to lead Lihu‘e On Fire to a 45-17 win over the Waimea Rimrockers in the Boys 14 Under game.
Brycen Kato notched seven points to lead the Rimrockers with Jarrick Ornellas, Ted Luis, Jr., Zachary Gardien, Matthew Lamarr, and Dayton Bayot each contributing a pair, one spectator noting that this was Lamarr’s first points of the season.
Joanna Jacinto and Natalie Mata each fired in eight points to lead Waimea to a 32-17 showing over the Lihu‘e Adventures in the Girls Under 19 finale, Mata taking the court for the second time that night.
Lorrine Lagoc-Agrade added seven points, the No. 3 player also taking the court for the second time in the evening. Jayme Jacinto, also playing her second contest of the night, chipped in four points with Josey Jacinto and Sheila Ramos closing the books with a pair each.
Tamalyn Hasegawa topped the Lihu‘e scoring with eight points with Nalinee Pickop adding five, and Cory Arashiro finishing with four points in the effort.
The KYBA 14 and Under program enters their championship week starting next Monday.
