You can see a variety of machines from fire breathing 200 mph alcohol burning dragsters and promod cars, 150 mph door slammers, street rods, sport compacts, and the everyday street driven cars. You can race the family wagon just bring a helmet, insurance card, and be sure to have a current safety sticker.
Hey mom, you could go home with a trophy and some cash to boot! It promises to be a fun filled day of sunshine (it’s always sunny on the West side) This is an event for the whole family tail-gate style, so bring the cooler and bar-b-que, and of course the umbrella or tent for big family gatherings.
On hot afternoons I’ve often seen enterprising dad’s filling wading pools for the keikis. The track is located about one mile past Kekaha turn makai (left) at the pine trees and follow the signs. Adults are $10 and kids 12 and under are free.
The Garden Isle Racing Association (GIRA) puts on the event and is a non-profit group that operates solely with the support of many volunteers and major sponsors. Chris Lowe of Kilauea, who is the association president, tells me that entry and racer fees pay only about half of operating costs.
For something different and fun for the whole family-check it out. See you at the races!
