LIHU’E — Although a bit breezy, weather conditions were perfect for viewing the 2005 Kamehameha Day Celebration parade that made its way from the lawn of the historic county building to Vidinha Stadium.
Special traffic closures were in effect for Eiwa Street, portions of Rice Street, and Ho’olako Street as the parade made its way makai in front of an audience that were spread out on both sides of Rice Street.
Headed up by the United States Navy color guard, the parade was attended by the many Hawaiian civic groups as well as peppered with the island beauty queens.
Headlining the queen lineup was 2004 Miss Kaua’i Filipina Jaelyn Caminos flanked by this year’s five hopefuls that will take the pageant stage this coming Saturday at the convention hall.
A single float anchored by the Tahitian dancers under Mi Nei Oliver lent color and sound to the procession that finished at Vidinha Stadium where the various pa’u units lined up along one lane of parking so visitors could get a better view of the intricacies of their lei and adornments.
Inside the stadium, a ho’olaule’a featuring entertainment, crafts, keiki rides, and, according to emcee Boom Shaka Laka Maka (Herrod), a “forest of food” featuring several different selections from local vendors.
