LIHU’E — Four Kaua’i Police Department officers were promoted to sergeant recently, and will move into their new spots officially on Thursday, June 16.
KPD’s newest sergeants, Randolph T. Chong-Tim Sr., Richard Rosa, Scott Kaui, Sr., and Nelson Agni, have a wealth of experience, with over 50 years of KPD service between them.
Three of the newest sergeants, Rosa, Kaui, and Agni, sat down with The Garden Island to discuss their recent promotions and the jobs that they do. Chong-Tim, the newest Lihu’e sergeant, was off, and could not be reached for comment.
All three said they were excited by the promotion and the ability to take more supervisory roles within the police department.
“It should be fun,” said Kaui, a current investigator with the KPD Vice Narcotics Unit who will be transferring to Hanalei. “After being in narcotics the last two years, I’m (looking forward to) having a normal schedule and a family life.”
Kaui, like Chong-Tim a 14-year veteran, is looking forward to his new assignment on the North Shore. “It’s going to be a good change,” he said.
Agni, “the old dog of the platoon” with 16 years of service, said he is looking forward to imparting some of his experience on the newer members of KPD. Agni, a Kekaha resident currently working out of the Waimea subdivision, will be staying close to home.
“I’m looking forward to actually giving them more responsibility,” he said of the newer officers, “to train recruits into the best officers they can be.”
Agni said he gets a lot of satisfaction out of his job, especially by working cases from start to finish, and working on the Community Action Team, which helps the disadvantaged.
Rosa, a current traffic-safety officer with a dozen years of KPD experience, wished to thank “first of all, God, for giving me the abilities to perform in my chosen profession.”
He’s going to be the relief sergeant, working around the island filling in for other sergeants.
Rosa said that he was extremely grateful to his wife, Staci, for her support, and “for learning how to be patient with the long hours, missed holidays and family gatherings,” as well as his children and his father- and mother-in-law, for always being there for his family.
Agni said that’s the toughest part of the job for him as well, the long hours, and working holidays. And Kaui, who has been working ridiculous hours in vice, is looking forward to the long hours of patrol, which will be a break for him.
The four passed a rigorous group of tests, which included written exams, interviews by a review board, and assessment exercises.
