Drawing the line in the sand
Kudos to the DOE for having the guts to finally draw the line in the sand by not letting the graffiti “vandals” senior students who painted the roof with “SENIORS 2005” not walk during the graduation. They should not have been allowed to be at the graduation ceremony at all. Their parents have failed in teaching them right from wrong. Their relatives should also get the message. If there are community service hours given out as punishment. They can spend time cleaning up our parks especially Wailua Homesteads Park.
Some students have no fear. Older folks just shake their heads and say: “Kids these days.” These young people obviously have no respect for their own families and their family name. I have seen students kick the slats out of the railings at Kapa‘a High School. I have witnessed the incorrigible students parked in the art class in one high school because there was no place to put them. These students thought it was funny to take the new art pencils which cost a lot of money, and break them into one inch pieces.
The DOE has a big problem with image and needs to build on improving the respect the parents seem to lack towards its teachers and schools. Build an occupational skills center where incorrigible students that interrupt classes every day can be sent to learn a trade in smaller classes with more discipline. It will be their last chance before our meager police force will try to deal with them.
Some parents need to understand that schools are learning institutions with rules not baby sitting centers to train your kid what’s right or wrong. If your son or daughter breaks the law then may be their parents did it too. Your kids are a mirror image of you, their parents. Go sit in class with your kid and see how he/she behaves. You might get a rude awakening. When the school calls you because your kid has a problem then listen don’t attack. This call may be the last chance for you to turn your kid into the right direction, If you can’t deal with the child rearing problem, seek outside help while your child is still in elementary school; high school is to late, you have lost.
