Brush fire burns along upper Niumalu Road

LIHU‘E – A brush fire whipped by tradewinds was battled by Kaua‘i Fire Department firefighters Friday evening in the Niumalu Road area, forcing road closings in the area. The fire broke out along the hillside mauka of Niumalu Road just below Garden Island Disposal about 8:30 p.m. and several crews were on the scene by 9:30 p.m., according to reports heard on a police scanner. At press time, firefighters were attempting to contain the fire. There was no initial report on the cause of the fire. The fire attracted crowds of onlookers.
