KAPA‘A – About 240 graduating seniors became Kaua‘i’s first public high school graduates of the season as Kapa‘a High School hosted their 2005 Commencement Exercises Friday afternoon at the Bernice Hundley Gymnasium.
Marching past an overflow crowd at the school’s gym, the graduates entered the gym with mixed feelings as some screamed, “We made it!” while others were more subdued, “I don’t wanna go. I don’t wanna go.”
The overflow crowd standing outside the gym was accommodated by a live television feed to four monitors facing outward so well-wishers could enjoy the ceremony and festivities through the coordination of the school’s staff and a corps of student video technicians.
Christine Lane, Jennifer Lindsey, Morgan Lorenz, Jenna Lynch, Jonathan Moeller, and Audrey Wickman were the class valedictorians, and Cody Iddings was the salutatorian.
Junior Keueva, Jr. delivered the keynote address.
Students who were earlier in the week prevented from walking during Friday night’s exercises were also on hand, but entered the gym following the processional so they could witness their classmates graduate.
The students, who were caught vandalizing the school’s property last weekend, had support from some of the graduates who donned football jerseys of the affected students beneath their gowns.
Waimea High School and Kaua‘i High School will be honoring their graduating seniors this coming Friday with the Menehune observing their exercises on the school’s front lawn while the Red Raiders will be utilizing Vidinha Stadium for their program.
