KAPA‘A — Seventh-grade students from Kapa‘a Middle School got a head start on their summer vacation when about 250 students in the class spent Wednesday at a class picnic at Kapa‘a New Park.
Wednesday marked the last day of classes for public-school students in the Eastside complex (Kapa‘a to Kilauea), who are on a modified school calendar. They return to classes in July.
“They’re all over the place,” one of the teacher chaperones said. “We’ve got basketball going on the courts, there’s some playing softball, tennis, volleyball, and just hanging out in the pavilion.”
While many engaged in sporting activities, others were engrossed in collecting autographs for their yearbooks and, for some, collecting autographs for their socks and, yes, even an old Kapa‘a Middle School shirt.
The seventh graders hiked down to the park from their school and, according to the chaperone, “The construction guys (working on the Kapa‘a bypass intersection) were real good.
Officer Garcia stopped the traffic so the students could cross. They’re real good.”
According to another teacher, the sixth graders from Kapa‘a Middle School went to Lydgate Park, and with the seventh graders just down the hill, that meant the eighth graders had the school all to themselves. Students in the Eastside complex, including Kapa‘a Elementary, Kapa‘a Middle School, Kapa‘a High School, and Kilauea School, began their summer break when school let out Wednesday around lunchtime.
