No home course advantage, no problem! The Kaua‘i High School boys’ golf squad defended its 2004 state title, with another magnificent state championship performance at Wailea’s Emerald Golf Course on Maui, yesterday at the 2005 HHSAA/David S. Ishii Boys State Golf Championships.
Last year, the boys and girls golf teams from Kaua‘i High School swept the state titles at Wailua Golf Course.
And this season, the girls finished fourth and the boys snatched up another first-place win. Kaua‘i’s Kellen Watabu blistered the course and shot a final round of 69, which gave him the individual state title with a 145 total.
Teammate Cory French, who was tied for the lead going into the final, grabbed third-place honors with a 148.
Kula’s Sean Ogawa carded a 154, but missed out on a medal by just one shot. Kaua‘i’s Bret Netzer tied last year’s state individual winner, Damien’s Kurt Nino at 156. Red Raider Chad Nonaka followed up with a 157, Kapa‘a’s Jett Levinthol finished up with a total of 162, Kaua‘i’s Michael Garcia and Kapa‘a’s Travis Toguchi both ended up with totals of 164. Waimea’s Noel Torres finished up at 171. Kamehameha-O‘ahu golfer Thomas Kua, a Kaua‘i native, was three strokes from the lead and carded a 148, which gave him the third-place medal.
