When the sun rises in Tahiti, one of the best events will take place as Kaua‘i’s Bruce Irons will tangle with Bruce Slater (FLA) starting at 8 a.m. Tahiti time at Teahupoo.
All surf reports indicate another day of varying inclement weather, but perfect six to eight-foot waves on tap with the bigger one towards the afternoon as a champion for the 2005 Billabong Pro Tahiti will emerge.
Bruce’s brother, Andy will also be on tap in the all-important Round Four matchups as Andy will be up against Australia’s Dean Morrison in heat four.
Andy advanced after picking up a 19.00 in his heat, defeating Hira Teriinatoofa who managed a 17.37 point performance. Andy’s 19.00 showing was the third best of the round, being bettered only by Kalani Robb’s 19.77 and Joel Parkinson’s 19.27.
In one of the most dramatic days in Billabong Pro Tahiti history, ten point rides were falling from the sky as important matchups were decided for Tuesday’s finals.
The surf continued to pump throughout the afternoon at Teahupoo and the five heats of Round Three wound out the day in almost epic six to eight-foot heaving pits.
Hawai‘i’s Robb threw down the first perfect 10 of the afternoon, ousting Australian goofy footer Mark Occhilupo, and stick the highest heat score of the event to date – a 19.77 out of a possible 20.
Current ASP ratings leader Trent Munro (Aus) continued his surge towards another strong result when he held off Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro while Narrabeen barrel hound Nathan Hedge (Aus) flew past Peterson Rosa (Bra) in heat 14.
Munro and Hedge will face each other Tuesday in heat seven of Round Four for an all-Aussie duel.
Brazilian super star Paulo Moura locked in a 10 of his own, backed by a 9.47 to end the run of Australian Mick Fanning. In the final heat of the day, Australian surfer Tom Whitaker scored another 10-point ride, the fourth of the day, oon his first wave to defeat Sunday’s final heat 10-point scorer Neco Padaratz of Brazil.
