Waimea, last year’s defending 4×100 relay state champions, picked up right where they left off on Saturday, as they successfully defended their title with another triumphant win at this year’s HHSAA/Island Movers State Track and Field Championships.
But this season’s team did last year’s squad one better, by breaking the state meet record, set by St. Anthony (42.98) back in 2003. Thomas Batis, Kenny Estes, Eric Oroc, and Troy Yamase breezed to a 42.78 record breaking time, which was almost a second better than Kahuku (43.31), the state’s second best 4×100 relay squad.
Kapa‘a’s Joe Locey, who suffered from an injury earlier this season, rebounded to claim the 200 meter dash state title with a time of 21.91.
Just two spots behind Locey was Estes, who crossed the finish line at 22.68. The Menehune junior, who had the best overall performance for a KIF athlete, also nailed down second-place in the 100 meter dash (11.21). Teammate Yamase was right behind Estes with a time of 11.22.
Warrior senior Jennifer Lindsey came back from a late season ankle injury to successfully defend her high jump state title with a 5-03 mark. Kaua‘i freshman Jamilee Jimenez finished tied for fourth at 4-11.
Waimea’s twin brother combo of Scott (9:23.90) and Nathan Martin (9:39.26) picked up third and sixth-place honors in the 3,000.
Kaua‘i freshman Tiffany Ikeda-Simao was all about the eights, carding three eight place finishes — in the 100 meter dash (13.18), the 200 meter dash (26.85), and the long jump (15-08.75).
Red Raider sophomore Chelsea Smith-Wishard tabbed fifth-place in the 1,500 with a 5:08.54. Kaua‘i’s 4×100 relay team (51.10) equaled last season’s state performance with another fourth-place medal on Saturday.
