Kula’s super doubles duo of Alex Latif and Kyle Barrett are trying to better last year’s state tournament performance and they are definitely on their way with a win in the round of 16 against Mililani’s Michael Oshita and Aaron Cook, 6-3, 6-3.
The fourth-seeded team heads to the quarterfinals to face off against the tournament’s 8th seed, Brandon Narasaki and Tyler Tobita of Baldwin today at 9:30 a.m.
Latif and Barrett made it all the way to the semifinals of last year’s state tennis tournament and are the only KIF players left in the 2005 Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA State Tennis Championships, which are being held at Central O‘ahu Park.
Meanwhile, Kaua‘i senior and KIF singles champion Jordan Kukino fell in a tough match against 11th seeded Aaron Tada of Hilo, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Kukino was seeded fourth in the event.
Red Raider senior Alex Sirois, the KIF girls’ singles champion also came up short in the round of 16 to Punahou’s Sheena David, 6-2, 6-1.
David was the tournament’s fourth seed.
The KIF’s girls’ doubles champions, Reiko Ayabe and Ciera Sherman of Waimea, were ousted in the round of 16 by Punahou’s Erin Katayama and Sherilyn Wee, 6-0, 6-1. Wee and Katayama are the fourth seed.
Island School’s Justin Vea and Kapa‘a’s Kia Tom were both defeated in the second round. Waimea’s Joe Mecham was eliminated in the first round.
Kaua‘i’s Chad Naganuma and James Odan also fell in the second round to the the sixth seed, Eric Cunningham and Michael Okai of Iolani.
Kaua‘i’s Steve Mc-Claren and Michael Hirahara and Kapa‘a’s Chris Ramelb and Danny Rodrick lost in the first round.
Kapa‘a’s Shawna Tamayose and Kula’s Ariel Carlson both were ousted in the first round as well. Waimea’s Sonya Tacub, who received a first round bye, was defeated in the second round.
Kaua‘i’s Cassady Sirois and Megan Vento couldn’t get past the first round. Kapa‘a’s Tasha Haraguchi and Crystine Ito, who faced Waimea’s Ayabe and Sherman in the semifinals of the KIF championship, lost to them again in the state tournament’s second round.
Kaua‘i’s Jaymee Wakumoto and Tati Zina, who got a first round bye, also lost in second round action.
