Mililani High School will be the site for the 2005 HH-SAA/Island Movers State Track and Field Championships, but for over 30 KIF tracksters, it will be upstairs in their heads where the actual championship will be in the balance.
Traditionally, Kaua‘i athletes do pretty well against the competition from O‘ahu and the other neigbor islands and this year could be the best so far for KIF track and field.
However, because of the lack of competition on the island with only three schools battling it out for the title, it creates a mental block that gives the other leagues the advantage even before the athletes compete in their respective events.
Individuals heading up to O‘ahu include Waimea’s Kenny Estes (100, 200), Troy Yamase (100), Eric Oroc (100, 200), Scott Martin (1500, 3000), Nathan Martin (3000), Thomas Batis (triple jump), Kollin Morikawa (triple jump), Robyn Arrington (100 hurdles, triple jump, high jump), Anna Baudouin (100 hurdles), Melia Prinzing (100 hurdles), Rachel Martin (3000), along with its boys 4×100, 4×400, and girls 4×100 teams.
The Kapa‘a contingent, the smallest of the three schools, include Joe Locey (200, 400), who is the state meet record holder in the 200 meters, Jennifer Lindsey (high jump), the defending state high jump champion, Joanne Kaona (100 hurdles, triple jump), Joliann Arzadon (high jump), Carrie Esaki (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), and Alex Pond (3000).
Kaua‘i, who has the biggest amount of qualifiers, should make a run for the girls’ state team title. The Red Raiders are led by freshman sensation Jamilee Jimenez (long jump, triple jump, high jump), Erin Fabro (discus, shot put), Tiffany Ikeda-Simao (100, 200, long jump), Emma Makepa-Foley (long jump, 200), Savannah Rollins (400, high jump), Chelsea Pabo (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Ashley Johnston (300 hurdles, high jump), Sherylle Cadiente (300 hurdles), Allison Arakaki (100 hurdles), and Chelsea Smith-Wishard (800, 1500, 3000). The boys state qualifiers include Kevin Cadiente (200), Lance Okasaki (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Jessie Slade (high jump), and Russell Bocalbas (high jump). The girls’ 4×100 and 4×400 relay squads, along with the boys 4×100 relay team will also be in running for a state title.
The 2005 HHSAA/Island Movers State Track and Field State Championships start today and end on Saturday with the finals of most events.
