With the state track and field championships starting up on Thursday and running through Saturday, the Red Raider girls have a “great” chance to run away with the state team title, which would be the first time ever for a KIF school.
“In my many years around KIF track and field, I don’t remember there being such a strong contender for a state title than the Kaua‘i girls’ squad,” Waimea track and field coach Dave Walker said.
Walker also mentioned that the key performers, who could rack up some points for the Red Raiders include freshmen Jamilee Jimenez (jumps and sprints) and Tiffany Ikeda-Simao (jumps and sprints), along with sophomore Chelsea Smith-Wishard (distance events).
Jimenez, who possesses immense talent for a freshman, is currently the second-best triple jumper in the state.
“She could win the whole thing and, in my opinion, I think she will. That girl is amazing. She’s got great physical talent,” Walker said.
The Central Washington University hall of fame track and field athlete has been around KIF track for a long time and considers the Kaua‘i girls’ domination as rare and unique.
“They are really young and will be around doing well for awhile, I just hope we can keep up,” Walker said.
Also helping out the Red Raiders cause will be Erin Fabro (discus, shot put), Emma Makepa-Foley (long jump, 200), Savannah Rollins (400, high jump), Chelsea Pabo (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Ashley Johnston (300 hurdles, high jump), Sherylle Cadiente (300 hurdles), Allison Arakaki (100 hurdles), along with the 4×100 and 4×400 relay squads.
