Community support at Kalaheo School
The outpouring of support for Kalaheo School’s staff and students has been remarkable. The blaze that burned down the school’s administration building and six classrooms failed to destroy the school’s spirit. In fact, this set back has brought out the best, and is providing a shining example to the school’s students in community civics. Kalaheo Missionary Church, Kaua‘i Christian Fellowship from Po‘ipu, the Hyatt Regency Kaua‘i, other public schools and a team of volunteers from the community, plus others, brought a sense of normalcy and peace to what could have been a devasting, chaotic scene for school children when they returned to class this morning.
An investigation by the Kaua‘i Fire Department and Kaua‘i Police Department is likely to show that an act of arson was the source of the fire. If so, those responsible should be brought to justice and made examples of. Burning down school buildings strikes at the heart of a community, and at the soul of impressionable young students. Added to the unexplained fire in 2003 at Wilcox Elementary in Lihu‘e, this fire is one too many for Kaua‘i.
