Not just another Mother’s Day!
By Duane Shimogawa Jr. – The Garden Island
So it’s time to treat mom to anything she wants today, but for me I’m going to do something different this year.
I’m going to concentrate on every single other day of the year and consider it Mother’s Days, instead of just one day in honor of good ‘ol mom.
But of course, since the entire world is singling out today as Mother’s Day, I’ll go with the flow and treat mom to some tasty brunch items and I’ll get her a nice card, write her a thoughtful note, and slide a gift certificate in the card from her favorite shopping place.
You see, this past year has been an eye opener for me with the passing of friends’ mothers and the realization of just how special a mother can be.
We are all blessed with one mother and she’s the one that guides us throughout this thing we call life.
Sometimes it’s very easy to get caught up in everyday activities, like work, school, play, and so on, but it’s even easier to let mom know how much we care.
To tell you the truth, I have fallen into that trap and it’s not a proud thing to be apart of.
However, the refreshing part of the deal is that it’s fairly easy to slip out of that mindset and change your attitude.
After all, the person that’s always there for you, will be there through the good and bad times, no matter what happens in your life.
Mother’s Day can be a time of reflecting on the past and how she has affected us in particularly good ways, which is a great way to look at the virtual holiday.
I am proud of today because I have a mom that is selfless and thinks of others first before herself, which is a rare trait these days.
My mom is also a great person to be around.
I remember going to the store with her and she would always take so long because she’d talk to everyone in every aisle.
Truthfully, this used to irritate every bone in my body, but now I realize just how special those moments are.
For one, she would always treat everyone the same. It didn’t matter who you were, she’d still open up her heart and let you in.
I used to always hear other people say that she should run for a seat on the county council and although she thought that they were kidding around, most of the time, they were actually being serious.
But most importantly, she has the ability to make anyone laugh or smile, through any situation.
However, being positive is probably one of her best traits. There have been many times, when I have been down and out, but she just knows how to make the best out of any situation.
So as well celebrate Mother’s Day today, be sure to make your mother feel as if she’s the only one in your world, because at one time or another, she’s done the same for you.
If you’ve played a sport then you know how important mom is.
She’s the one that takes you to all the games and practices and won’t yell at you if you have a really bad game.
Plus she always washes your uniform, even if it smells like something out of the bottom of the hamper.
So whatever you do today, make sure mom is a big part of your day, because you are definitely a big part of her’s!
