He is survived by wife, Louise Bowman, and daughter, Devaki Holman, both residents on Kauai, Hawaii..
He was born Feb. 17, 1924 in Ohio, but lived most of his life in San Bernardino, Calif., where he was a successful food broker for major companies before moving to San Clemente, Calif. in 1978 Clyde and Louise were active members of the Presbyterian Church. The family came to Kauai in 2001.
Clyde is a veteran of the WW2 War, serving in the US Navy.
Clyde, or “Babe” as he is known in musical circles, was a singer, songwriter, arranger, and accomplished musician. He acquired the nickname “Babe” because he was so young when he started working in Big Bands.
“Babe” started playing the trumpet at the age of 8 and the trombone and saxophone at 10. In Jr. High School he organized his own 10-piece band with vocalist Gayle Peck, who would later reach stardom and be known as Julie London. Clyde “Babe” Bowman played with Big Band “greats” like Stan Kenton, Harry James, Dextor Gordon, Artie Shaw, Hawk Halstead, Les Carlson and Chuck Corbett.
On Kaua‘i, Clyde started his own recording companies, Bowman Music and Gobow Records of Hanalei from which five musical CDs were produced. In 2002 to 03, Clyde and High School musical director, Catherine Paleka, organized a Kapa‘a High School “Swing Band” summer program. The kids rehearsed every Saturday and were so enthusiastic about learning Big Band music that for the next school year Clyde booked them into hotel engagements, weddings and other events around the island. Their performances inspired donations from private parties and service clubs of the community to help the Kapa‘a’s Music Department repair old instruments and purchase new ones.
Clyde will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. As a member of the Rotary Club of Hanalei, and the Church of the Pacific his contributions to the community were significant.
Private memorial services will be held at The Church of the Pacific in Princeville on Saturday, May 7. Please send any cards or letters to Devaki and Louise c/o The Church of the Pacific, P.O. Box 223145, Princeville, HI 96722.
