Hilo, Hawai‘i — Kaua‘i’s Tiana Lum-Tucker leads the 13th-ranked University of Hawai‘i at Hilo women’s tennis team as they head to Pomona, Calif. for the 2005 Xenia Team Tournament hosted by Cal Poly Pomona, Friday, April 1 through Sunday, April 3.
In the eight-team, championship format tournament, the Vulcans face 12th-ranked Abilene Christian in a 10 a.m. match. On Saturday, they face either 10th-ranked UC San Diego or 25th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona. Sunday’s opponent will be either 7th-ranked Rollins College, Grand Canyon University, Cal State Bakersfield or Azusa Pacific University.
On the annual Spring Break on Oahu tour, the team went 3-1 and improved the team’s overall record to 6-4 and conference mark to 3-3.
On March, 19 the women defeated 18th-ranked Hawai‘i Pacific University, 6-2.
The team swept through the doubles competition with Mai Fujii and Tiana Lum-Tucker beating Isidora Ljuri and Josefine Paulie (8-1), Krystal Hangai and Eve Vicquenault beating Shakti Stream and Tina Klep (8-6), and Sayaka Fukumoto and Wendy Owen beating Cecilia Lundberg and Katarina Jacobson (2-1, retired).
In singles, Fujii defeated Klep (6-2, 6-2) and Lum-Tucker beat Stream (6-3, 6-3) while Fukumoto won by default. Vicquenault lost to Ljuri (6-1, 6-3) and Hangai fell to Jacobson (6-0, retired).
On March 21, the Vulcans beat 22nd-ranked Bowdoin College 7-2.
After dropping two of three doubles matches, the Vulcans swept the singles competition. Fujii beat Kara Perriello (6-1, 6-4), Vicquenault beat Hughes (6-1, 1-6, 7-5), Lum-Tucker beat D’Elia (6-2, 6-4), Hangai beat Raymond (0-6, 6-3, 6-3), Fukumoto beat Julia Shaver (6-4, 6-2) and Jennifer Earle beat Alison Curtin (7-5, 6-3).
Fujii and Lum-Tucker beat Perriello and Hughes (8-2) for a doubles win. Falling to Bowdoin in doubles were Hangai and Vicquenault to Gray and D’Elia (8-3) and Earle and Fukumoto to Shaver and Raymond (8-2).
On March 24, the Vulcans fell to Xavier University, 2-7.
Lum-Tucker beat Stephanie Bauer (6-4, 6-3) and Fukumoto beat Alicia Papa (2-6, 7-6, 10-7) for the team’s points. Fujii fell to Lauren Clary (7-5, 6-1), Vicquenault fell to Kristen Clary (6-4, 7-6), Hangai fell to Jackie Vilines (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) and Earle fell to Annie Diedalis (6-0, 6-3). In doubles, Fujii and Lum-Tucker fell to Bauer and Lauren Clary (8-6), Hangai and Vicquenault fell to Papa and Vilines (8-3), and Fukumoto and Owen fell to Kristen Clary and Sarah Potts (8-2). In the final match of the trip, the Vulcans beat Chaminade University, 9-0, on March 25. Fujii beat Summer Spangler (6-2, 6-0), Vicquenault beat Kimi Chikazawa (6-0, retired), Lum-Tucker beat Cori Tamanaha (6-0, 6-0), Fukumoto beat Booker (6-0, 6-0), Earle beat Kristina Hutmacher (6-0, 6-1) and Owen won by default.
In doubles, Fujii and Lum-Tucker beat Chikazawa and Spangler (8-2), Fukumoto and Owen beat Tamanaha and Booker (8-0), and Hangai and Vicquenault beat Hutmacher and Alohalani Castro by default.
